Murderous Attack on CPI(M) Leader

Former MLA and CPI(M) leader Benoy Datta was kidnapped and mercilessly beaten by TMC hoodlums in Khanakul, Hoogly on November 13. Com. Datta was returning after addressing a meeting commemorating the November Revolution in Mostafapur, Khanakul. He was pillion riding a motorcycle of a Party worker. TMC workers encircled the motorcycle and attacked Datta with sticks, dragged him away and beat him mercilessly. Local people rushed to search for him and rescued him.

Com. Datta was taken to a primary health centre and then to Arambagh Hospital and admitted there. He had suffered serious head injuries.

Almost the entire Arambagh sub-division has become a terrorised zone for the last two and half years. Thousands of CPI(M)activists and supporters have been forced to leave their homes. CPI(M) and other mass organisations are not allowed to function, Party offices and houses have been burnt. Com.Benoy Datta was himself arrested in fabricated cases after TMC came to power. Later he was released on the direction of the court.

As usual, no one was arrested after this attack as local police are unwilling to take any action. Left Front leaders went to meet Datta in his house. They expressed anguish with regard to the role of the police. When the news reached the CPI(M) State Centre, opposition leader Suryakant Misra contacted the authorities in the state administration.
