Kerala: Towards Cleaner Environment

Secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M), Pinarayi Vijayan,  has said that the Party in Kerala would take up the issue of proper garbage management as a new task. This he said would help in creating a healthy environment and ensuring a healthy life. He was speaking at a seminar in Alappuzha organized by the AKG Padana Gavesnana Kendram. He said that the people have to take up this challenge seriously and process waste at the source itself to protect the environment.

Pinarayi said that the Party would involve all class and mass organizations, people’s representatives, Party led local bodies as well as experts in this exercise. He said that in the coming months, hundreds of waste management units would come up in the state.

It may be recalled that the Party at its state conference held in Thiruvananthapuram and the state plenum at Palakkad had discussed this issue thoroughly.

Inaugurating the seminar, opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said that pollution of drinking water is a grave challenge before Kerala and it has to be earnestly addressed. VS said that the fast pace of urbanization is resulting in the piling up of garbage as also the shortage of safe drinking water. Extensive use of plastic carry bags has compounded the problem of waste disposal, he said.

The Party would take up projects for the safe disposal and management of waste through the local bodies controlled by it. In Alappuzha, under the guidance of CPI(M) MLA Thomas Isaac the slogan of “clean house, clean city”, is being implemented with biogas plants being installed to treat waste at source.
