Prakash On Bengal Elections

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat expressed concern over the blatant attack on democracy and democratic rights of the people in West Bengal. The Panchayat elections in West Bengal going to held from July 11 is witnessing unprecedented violence perpetrated by Trinamool Congress. Prakash said that at the stage of nominations itself, nearly 6000 candidates of the opposition i.e. the Left Front and the Congress have not been able to file their nominations. In many places, even after nominations were filed, TMC gangs are going around threatening candidates and preventing them from conducting the election campaign. Already 12 people have been killed in the attacks.

The TMC government is trying its best to prevent the central police forces from being deployed to provide security during the polls. It has been attacking the State Election Commission and TMC leaders are issuing threats to the Election Commissioner. What is taking place is a blatant attack on democracy and democratic rights of the people. Despite the widespread attacks, the Left Front is conducting its campaign and going to the people.
